Abstract

This paper provides a background on the legal protection of animals and the Colombian context, which allows us to enter into four different areas of legal protection of animals, namely: (i) Punishable conducts (animal abuse, exceptions, wildlife trafficking, illegal experimentation, illegal fishing and hunting activities, and contraventions); (ii) slaughter of animals for consumption (animal processing plants, hunting and fishing); (iii) animal experimentation and research (for commercial and non-commercial purposes); (iv) use of animals for security purposes (animal-drawn vehicles, security and surveillance activities).
