La primera de estas hipótesis que, como decíamos, se ha convertido en parte de la tradición histórica del manuscrito, se halla por primera vez en la obra de Samuel Purchas (1625, 3:1065-1066), quien presentaba el Mendocino en el contexto de su enciclopedia de exploración Hakluytus Posthumus: or, Purchas His Pilgrimes, presentada en 1625 de la siguiente manera:
