MATERNAL BIRTH TRAUMA
A mother’s experience of a traumatising birth can have a profound effect on her for the rest of her life. As a result, these women can lose touch with their bodies, have a heightened panicky fear of sexuality and are emotionally unavailable for their children. They quickly find their children overwhelming, easily getting highly stressed by their needs and so becoming aggressive towards them. They might ‘want to hurl them against the wall’ when they scream and cannot be calmed down. They themselves urgently need emotional support and help to resolve their birth traumas. After every caesarean birth, trauma treatment for the mother as well as for the child should be offered as a matter of course.
