En los iconos más antiguos de María, casi siempre se la retrata sosteniendo a su hijo pequeño: dándole siempre al mundo, como en el capítulo 12 del Apocalipsis. Como verdadera madre, habitualmente se la retrata señalando a su hijo, pero dirigiendo la mirada hacia los espectadores, sus otros hijos. Cuida maternalmente de su hijo —puesto que un niño pequeño no puede mantenerse en pie por sí mismo—, al tiempo que cuida como madre a sus hijos que están en el mundo y nos atrae junto a Él.
