‘Symbiosis’ means living together. It does not mean that mother and child are one. Mother and child are separate living beings from the beginning.17 In the ideal situation a mother supports both the child’s symbiotic and autonomy needs, and the child also supports his mother’s development to become an increasingly mature, adult.
