Abstract: MOOC have been gaining important spaces within the online training offer, even being areas of expansion for relevant universities around the world. However, from many voices in the academic community, the effectiveness of these open courses has been questioned due to their low completion rates (between 5-8%). The objective of this study is to analyze how the levels of digital competence of MOOC participants influence the completion rate, with the understanding that they require certain knowledge and skills of technological ecosystems in order to access, interact, learn and complete training activities. To this end, two instruments (pre and post-tests) have been designed based on four of the five dimensions of digital competence of The Digital Competence Framework 2.0 of the European Commission and duly validated by expert judgement for this study, applying to a total of 9,075 participants from 12 MOOC on energy sustainability. The main results confirm that the level of digital competence is a key predictor for approval or desertion in MOOC, ergo for completion rates, although there is no improvement in outgoing digital competence levels simply by participating in online activities
